Paxil

PaxilParoxetine, or Paxil, is a powerful antidepressant marketed by Smith Kline Beecham (now GlaxoSmithKline). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted approval of Paxil in 1992, allowing it to be prescribed for a broad range of health issues, including:

  • Post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD
  • Obsessive-compulsive behavior
  • General anxiety disorders
  • Panic attacks
  • Treatment of “hot flashes” for women undergoing menopause

Paxil has come under U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) scrutiny numerous times over the last two decades, with users reporting a wide range of health concerns, such as:

  • Chest pain
  • Seizures and fainting
  • Headaches or dizziness
  • Hallucinations

As a result of FDA investigations, federal prosecutors brought criminal charges against GlaxoSmithKline, alleging that company officials had fabricated clinical data, and had covered up findings that Paxil could be harmful to teenagers and young adults. In 2012, GlaxoSmithKline paid a $3 billion fine as part of a plea bargain to settle the criminal prosecution.
