Your employer can force you to work overtime and can even fire you if you refuse to do so under the Fair Labor Standards Act. The act does not limit the number of hours in a day or week an employer can schedule an employee to work. It requires only that employers pay nonexempt employees overtime (time and a half the worker’s regular pay rate) for any hours over 40 that the employee works in a week.
