Surgical Mesh

In recent years, a surgical mesh has been developed to provide either temporary or permanent support for organs or tissues, most commonly in hernia repair procedures. A version of the product, known as transvaginal mesh, has also been used to repair pelvic organ prolapsed and stress urinary incontinence. The mesh may be constructed of organic or inorganic materials, or some combination thereof. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), hundreds of thousands of hernia surgeries are performed every year using the product, usually without incident.

In 2011, though, the FDA released a notice to the public concerning the potential complications resulting from the use of surgical mesh. Among the documented adverse side effects are:

  • Allergic reactions to the mesh
  • Dangerous adhesions
  • Injuries to nearby organs, nerves or blood vessels

In response to FDA concerns, as well as a number of lawsuits, many of the manufacturers of surgical mesh have pulled their products from the market.

If you or someone you love has suffered injury after surgery involving surgical mesh, GetLegal has the tools and resources to help you find skilled legal representation to protect your rights.
