Alendronate
Alendronate sodium or Alendronic acid are the chemical names for the product Fosomax, marketed by Merck for the treatment of osteoporosis and other bone conditions. Fosomax can be sold alone or in combination with a vitamin D supplement. Merck’s patent on the drug expired in 2008, so Alendronate can now be purchased in generic form. It is currently the most widely prescribed drug of its type in America.
Alendronate has been tied to a number of adverse health conditions, including:
- Osteonecrosis of the jaw, a deterioration of bone mass in the jaw, often associated with the incidence of any dental work
- Esophageal cancer
- Ulceration or tearing in the esophagus
- Skin rash
- Generalized muscle, bone and joint pain
