Alendronate sodium or Alendronic acid are the chemical names for the product Fosomax, marketed by Merck for the treatment of osteoporosis and other bone conditions. Fosomax can be sold alone or in combination with a vitamin D supplement. Merck’s patent on the drug expired in 2008, so Alendronate can now be purchased in generic form.
